The Kentucky Reading ProjectThe mission of the Kentucky Reading Project is to increase student achievement and family involvement in literacy by empowering P-5 teachers to design and implement comprehensive, research-based instruction driven by the on-going assessment of diverse learners' needs. The Kentucky Reading Project (KRP) is a professional development initiative for Kentucky public school elementary (P-5) teachers. It is designed to improve student achievement and emphasize family involvement in literacy. More than 2200 teachers representing more than 140 school districts have been trained in the KRP. The yearlong, graduate level reading course consists of a two-week summer institute, four follow-up sessions during the year, and at least one coaching visit to each teacher. Teachers or teams of teachers who are interviewed and selected will develop and implement a Literacy Action Plan (LAP) in their classrooms. The LAP is focused on a balanced literacy approach that will improve teachers' knowledge and instructional practices in literacy. Faculty members from all eight state universities serve as directors and instructional leaders for the KRP. Reading First coaches from the Kentucky Department of Education work in collaboration with the KRP Directors. Training specialists from the National Center for Family Literacy provide information, resources, and support regarding family involvement in literacy. |
