The authors of this book wanted to answer the question, "What do exemplary classrooms look like?" They conducted five case studies of first-grade classrooms where the teacher was identified as providing excellent literacy instruction. Many commonalities emerged, and they found that effective reading instruction was complex, involving elements of both direct skills instruction and whole language frameworks.
