Abstract

This article describes the implementation of an early literacy intervention program designed to help at-risk kindergartners in urban schools. The Kindergarten Early Literacy Tutoring (KELT) program is designed to decrease the academic gap for these students and to help them develop language capacities and literacy knowledge. The program provides the students with a tutor and an additional source of support during the critical language development period. Studies have shown that such tutoring programs are typically successful. Information about the program is presented.
